As Country Bumpkins is already listed on AIM, it is able to take advantage of simplified listing procedures. This spares Alan the horror of the traditional timetable which can easily take up 100% of a management's time. CB has most of these anyway, but it does beef up its PR activity. Since one of the main purposes of the move to the Main List is to increase its profile, it is important that the financial press get to hear about it. Alan spends a lot of time touring the City with his advisers, speaking to fund managers and banging the drum.
Accompanying him is Justin Greenhorn, the newly-appointed head of e-Bumpkins. e-Bumpkins is an e-commerce offshoot of the mail order business, and is due to be launched in time for the listing. "JG" has drawn up a business plan which shows online revenues of £12m within 12 months and £300m within 36.
Alan has severe misgivings. But his PR advisors insist that the City wants to hear about CB's online plans, so he goes along with it.
Country Bumpkins moves up to the Main List in a blaze of favourable publicity. e-Bumpkins isn't ready in time ("teething technical problems"), but no-one notices.
