Buying gilts is reasonably straightforward. Like shares, you have to go though a broker.
Occasionally, the government has new gilt issues, and they are often sold direct to the public either at a fixed price or by tender or auction. Details of forthcoming issues can be found at the website of the Debt Management Office (www.dmo.gov.uk).
The advantage of buying a new issue of gilts is that there is no dealing commission.
Instructing your broker to buy or sell gilts is similar to instructing him on shares:
If your broker uses a service known as Bondscape, he will also be able to do a search for you for bonds fulfilling specific criteria e.g. yield, maturity date, credit rating. This can help narrow down your selection process.
