12. Types of investment - introduction
As we mentioned earlier, one feature of investing in the US market, compared to other markets, is the much bigger range of investment choices available. Using a dollar account at a broker you can invest in:
- US stocks
- US Treasury bonds and other types of bond
- Non-US shares that have a dollar listing through a device known as an American Depositary Receipt (ADR)
- Exchange traded funds (index tracking mutual funds that can be bought and sold like shares)
- Offshore mutual funds (conventional UK authorised US dollar denominated mutual funds)
- Call and put options on a wide range of US stocks and indices.
