In the last five years, the software available to private investors has improved massively in power and functionality to the extent that you now have access to the same analytical tools as professionals.

Systems can be bought for between £500 and £1,500 and run on standard home PCs. Depending on which one you buy, you will get:

• historical price and volume data for FTSE companies
• charting functions that allow you to view the data for any company as a line chart, bar chart, point and figure, or other type of chart
• the ability to draw lines on the charts and perform 'what if?' scenarios.
• real or delayed price feeds
• portfolio management

The systems are easy to use and flexible. You set the parameters, the software presents the data, and you make the decisions.
